Tk 100 crore more for water management development
Some Tk 100 crores of spending to be increased for water management project of the government. Now, the cost of the project will be at Tk 663.88 crore from Tk 563.49 crore.
Ministry of Water Resources has sent a proposal for the cost amendment of project to the Ministry of Planning. The approval process has already been completed. The project may be presented at the next meeting of Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
AN Shamsuddin Azad Chowdhury, Member Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural Institutions Division of Planning Commission said, "If the revised project is implemented, efficient water resources management and polders in the coastal areas will experience increasing production of crops, fisheries and animal resources. Moreover the living standard of the rural people will be improved."
According to the project proposal, changes in the project location and acquisition of new land areas, creating culverts, drainage pipes, construction of pump shed etc, pushes the project expenditure to be increased. However, the tenure of the project has been extended for two years. Now, the project has been scheduled to implement by December 2020.
Water resources ministry sources said, the Integrated Permanent Water Management Plan program was implemented by November 2003 in joint venture with Bangladesh and the Netherlands government.
In order to maintain the success and consistency of the program, the program documentation was created to implement an integrated program involving food security, business development in the water resources management system, which is called the Blue Gold Program.
The Blue Gold Program is being implemented by two organizations - Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) and Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) with separate development partnerships in private sector.
BWDB is coordination to implement the overall program including the implementation of water management program as the main implementing agency. Department of Agricultural Extension is implementing all activities related to agricultural expansion under the food security program.
Besides, Livestock Department and Fisheries Department are engaged in the development of livestock and fisheries in food security.The original project is approved by ECNEC on July 30, 2013 for implementation of the total project cost of 563.49 crore from 01 January 2015 to 2018.
The main activities of the project are: appointing 336 foreign consultants, 3,369 domestic consultants, 7619 domestic support staff, construction of 31 gates including drainage, construction of 17 drainage outlets, rehabilitation of 235 outlets, rehabilitation of 186 flushing, 8 kilometer coast conservation works, construction of 330 kilometer embankment, construction of 32 culverts for water management, acquiring 34.50 hectares of land, construction of 6 sheds and providing 9000 meters of drainage pipes to the pump.
