Grylls and Hudgens take on the Rocky Terrain of the Sierra Nevada Desert

  • Print

Vanessa Hudgens is an actress popularly known to be High School Musical series (2006-2008) and the show Powerless (2017). Grylls starts the episode by saying that she has recently lost her father but she is willing to do him proud by coming out here with him and showing what she is made of. This episode originally aired on September 16th, 2017 and is the last episode of Running Wild Season 3. Hudgens is one of the youngest members in the show to appear and she and Grylls take on Sierra Nevada Desert.

Hudgens is waiting for Grylls what seems to be next to a lake. Hudgens has been instructed by Bear to use her knife and scrape of fly larvae from underneath rocks and put them in a zip lock bag. Grylls gets on a helicopter saying that Vanessa is known for her acting, singing and good looks but that may not help her in the wild.

While on the helicopter Grylls explains the terrain saying the high sierra were formed by volcanoes over 700,000 years ago. The area sports great boulder deserts and sharp cliffs and as he states it's not walk on the red carpet. Before Grylls arrives, Hudgens explains her survival skills may be laughable as she wouldn't know how to forage for food, start a fire or build shelter but she knows that they are needed so that's a start.

Grylls arrives and meets Hudgens and says her chariot awaits and Hudgens smiles as they enter the helicopter. Grylls briefs her that they are heading from the lake to the mountains. Hudgens screams as she gets pumped for the adventure. Grylls then gives us the summary of their journey; on the first day, they will start with covering over a mountain of boulders and steeping cliffs, and go through tunnels as they will forage for food and shelter.

On the second day, they will be entering volcanic terrain with its crumbling rocks and slopes to reach their extraction point. Hudgens and Grylls exit the helicopter by climbing down on the rope and Hudgens is screaming in awe and amazement. Hudgens went first and Grylls followed her and soon he gives the clear for the helicopter to leave. Hudgens is excited she did that and Grylls compliments her being cool under pressure.

Hudgens and Grylls start their journey with Grylls telling the audience that the traveling South will not be easy as they are surrounded by boulders and cliffy areas. We see Hudgens and Grylls get up and down such boulders. Grylls asks what made Hudgens do the show with him and she explains her father was a fire fighter and they use to go on a lot of hikes.

She was always amazed listening to her father's stories of fighting fires in the forests, of being chased by gears and coming face to face with rattlesnakes who have been coming out hibernation. She loves this experience of being in nature and exploring places most people won't usually wander into.

They come to their first challenge. Grylls and Hudgens have tied a rope around each other and Grylls states that if he she falls, he also falls and Hudgens says she doesn't wish to hear that. And, it can go the other way around to. Hudgens jokes that Grylls should catch her if she falling. Hudgens sits as Bear climbs up the boulder. She looks nervous and does mention she may not completely like this, climbing steep rocks. With a little struggle she does make the climb. Now, as they climbed up they must climb down.

Hudgens reveals she is afraid of heights. Grylls uses a flaky rock as an anchor point and then explains the most precarious part of this is the anchor point but as long as the rope stays low and they are committed to this they should be able to get down. As she makes down she starts to overhang and Grylls states they are running out of rope. She makes it and Grylls shows us the rope and goes like it feels like luck more than good judgment and follows Hudgens down.

Grylls catches a lizard as an appetiser and kills in front of her as she is shocked. They then find a spot to drink water and eat the fly larva. She talks about how her career stared. She was born in a town outside of San Diego and moved around a lot. She joined a performing art school and she got a chance to film something in London but the school didn't want to give her permission as it was for five months. So, she started home-schooling and her mother helped and she went to London with her alongside their little sister.

Grylls mentions it must be hard to make friends and Hudgens confesses it was and so she did latch onto bad relationships but she lived and learned. When asked what she learned she stated that you need only a core group of friends and not many and to be grateful. Grylls is amazed her positivity and enthusiasm and realizes that's what makes her driven. She did say behind the scenes that this journey required positivity and how strong it can be to use it to make through so many of life's events.

As they are moving, suddenly Grylls pulls back Hudgens and she gets alarmed as well. They soon see a rattlesnack. Grylls traps the rattlesnake with a stick and says it's going to be dinner. Then he has Hudgens cut its head off. Grylls reminds us that the snake's head is still dangerous after decapitation and can bite has live venom in it so one must be careful.

He buries the head and skins the snake and Hudgens is surprised it seems to be still moving. She keeps the rattling bit as souvenir and Grylls scares her a bit with the skinned snake as he knots it up with the lizard and puts in the bag. She also gets marked with snake blood on her face to commerate the moment of her first snake kill and she says she feels like a warrior. Grylls finds shelter in an overhanging rock that would protect them against the elements and got a good fire going.

While Hudgens is collecting rocks for the fire she stumbles across a scorpion under a rock. Grylls is concerned by her sudden voice and comes to check on her and finds out about the scorpion. Grylls says they are nasty and dangerous but they have a lizard and a snake so they got enough food for now. Grylls makes a fire using Hudgen's phone battery (he says he will replace her phone after the show).

He says the fire starts when the lithium ions in the battery mix with the oxygen. He says there is one shot at this and hides with Vanessa behind a rock face as these things can explode. HE CAUTIONS NOT TO TRY THIS AT HOME but only when your life is on the line it can help you.

They have a close conversation about her father and share a hug. They eat the snake and Hudgens says she has always been curious and that it has too many bones, it is not bad but not great. They sleep on the sand and gravel ith Grylls burying heated rocks underneath well enough to warm their bodies. Grylls mentions the body's abdomen and chest are the core parts to keep warm.

The next day they move on and they also move underneath tunnel like areas on their tummies. They even sit on steam coming out from rocks. They did start doing the final stretch of their journey, which is climbing down a rocky steeping side covered in rocks. They have to be very careful as the rocks have a tendency to be precarious and get out and cause a landslide. Some rocks actually moved as they traversed it.

Soon, they come close to their extraction point but it's down below a 1000ft slide. Grylls say they will do something called scree running. It is the fastest way. Hudgens looked shocked as anything. Grylls explains that she must lean back a bit, keep a low centre of gravity and if Hudgens feels she is losing balance just touch with her hands, left and right, to keep it.

They begin and Hugdens is both scared and excited and Grylls says it's the fastest descent of her life. She starts screaming too but they make it as a helicopter comes and takes them away. Hudgens states she feels exhausted but alive and she knows this was a novel experience. Grylls hugs her and says she is proud.
