Channing Tatum's adventure in Sierra Nevada

  • Print

In this edition of Running Wild with Bear Grylls the famous survivalist is with Hollywood actor Channing Tatum. Channing Tatum is described by Gryllsto have a meteoric rise to film and possessing high grossing films that are enjoyed by various audiences. He also married actress, Jennifer Dewan, and recently had a child.

This was said in the airing of the show as the original premiere of the show was August 11th, 2014 and the child was born in 2013. The pair will be exploring Yosemite National Park, which is a national park west of Sierra Nevada or California in the United States. This is the third episode of the first season of the show.

Grylls say that Tatum grew up in the deep South of the US but his adult life was spent in the city so he wants to reconnect with the wild. Tatum has said Behind the Scenes that he grew up in Mississippi and that it was half rural and suburban. Any chance, a part of him wanted to escape to the wild, it was the dream. He says there may be an immature part of men want to be in the wild as the ideal boy scout and Grylls is like "Chief Scout."

In the beginning of the episode, Tatum waits for Grylls and he even left him a note saying that he has to learn some knots as his life would depend on them. He comments "I am screwed." Grylls boards a helicopter en route to get to Tatum. Tatum says these sorts of journeys are sort of like a "reset for the soul" and then laughs as he can't make a knot.

Grylls comes and takes Tatum on the helicopter. The entire ride is punctuated by nervous laughter by Tatum. They come to their extraction point which seems like a pool of water. Grylls suggests they do a back flip and go into the water. He also cautions Tatum not to jump up to this flip nor else the helicopter blades will swipe his head clean. They manage to do a low backflip into the water.

They get out and Tatum shakes hands with Grylls as that was an awesome experience for him. We would like to remind viewers that what they did was in the presence of Bear Grylls and should not be replicated. Grylls cautioned us on the immense danger of the helicopter propeller blades.

Grylls states that Channing is new to this but this is just the beginning and they haven't eased into anything. Tatum stated that this was not rehearsed and it was so intense. He had flipped off things before but not off a helicopter with blades of death above.

They do some warmups as pushups on the land. They strip off their pants to dry them and also wear their boots. Tatum notices that Grylls is wearing underwear similar to the British Flag and said he should had been patriotic too and wore US themed ones.

They joke on about this and Tatum first profession as an exotic dancer. Tatum states that he was out of college and heard something on the radio that they needed dancers so he went to do dancing. There was an audition and he was nervous as she would be stripping.

Then Grylls gives him some survival items: water and a hatchet. Grylls then said they would have to hike for around 30 miles to their right. Grylls gives a summary of the journey to the viewer stating what they would be doing in the next 48 hours. They will be hiking through the forest and climb up a nearly 9000ft dome and camp for the first night. The next day they must find a way down the vertical dome and make it to their extraction point.

They go into the woods and there is some good pine. Grylls explains that to start a fire may be hard if someone doesn't know what they are doing. But there are flammable barks in certain areas and Grylls demonstrates to Tatum how a small piece cut off can actually start a decent fire. Tatum is amazed as it did not require any kindling and comments that now he understands why forest fires go out of control.

They soon see a bark scorpion and Grylls says to be careful as they are poisonous. He says small scorpions are dangerous ones as their bite is fatal and bigger ones you don't need to worry much. Channing is told take out the hatchet, as he has been charged with all weaponry in the journey, and Grylls kills the scorpion. Then they eat the scorpion together as a snack.

Soon, they encounter a rattlesnake. Grylls says to be careful and says to the viewers as soon as he can cut the head of the snake they can relax. He pins the snake down with a branch and Tatum cuts the head. The snake can still be dangerous in this state so they don't go near the head as they can bite even though they are beheaded. The snake meat will serve as a meal later. Grylls cuts off the rattling tail of the rattle snake and makes it into a necklace for Tatum. Then Grylls, with the help of Tatum, guts the snake by removing its skin.

Soon, they stop for a water break as in this altitude and weather it is actually dangerous to get thirsty so they must hydrate themselves. Tatum and Grylls talk and Tatum states he will work hard at whatever he is given to do and he is ambitious and wants to not play the game, as in acting, but change it. Grylls states to the viewers his joking and focused nature is making this adventure a pleasure.

They get to the rock dome and find one point of climbing up. Grylls gets a bit up first and ties a rope so Tatum can climb. This is all pretty dangerous and Grylls mentions this. Soon they are traversing up and they make the climb with Grylls letting Tatum having the honours to lead them to the summit. Grylls said it is time to eat the snake meat as they are 9000ft up and they are burning a lot of energy but not putting much in so they need this. Grylls tells Tatum to make the fire and aim at a mark as they want to hit the fat pine they have carried.

They start the fire and start cooking the snake. Tatum talks about how he was never good in school and that it was so discouraging seeing he was the last one finishing a test. He said it may have been a combination of ADD and dyslexia but now he is thankful. He got the fight to try and dedicate himself to something.

They move a bit down the dome as there is a storm coming and Grylls has to make sure they are not exposed to wind and lightning. It is under the summit and it is like a ledge and it is wide enough to hold two people. They sleep with hooded terrain jackets and put their feet in their bags as like a cover and sleep on the space. They get down the rock face by repelling themselves but Grylls has to make sure how far the rope goes down and traverses down first.

They get down a bit and they have run out of rope but Grylls has a contingency plan of carrying extra rope for such occasions. They face forward by tying one of those knots that Grylls had instructed Tatum to learn. They get down and a hot metal hook is given to Tatum to keep as souvenir. They get tie ropes to a helicopter and are elevated from the ground as the episode ends. Both have a lot of fun with each other in this journey
