More tax on fast food, soft drinks prescribed
Public health activists have opined that the government should impose more taxes to discourage the upward tendencies of fast food intake in Bangladesh. They also prescribed the same for junk food and soft drinks, saying there are 8 ministries and 25 related laws to ensure food safety and quality.
Blaming unhealthy food for the alarming rise of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs), they recommended coordinated and long-term planning among all ministries and departments. They came up with the remarks at a discussion titled 'Ensuring healthy food for NCD control' at the Institute of Public Health recently.
The discussion was presided over by Dr Nur Mohammad while Prof Brig (Rtd) Abdul Malik, Prof Dr AHM Anayet Hossain, Shafiqul Islam, Dr Syed Mahfuzul Huq, Abu Naser Khan and Dr Khaleda Islam were also present.
