Road, train accidents claim 13 lives
Thirteen people were killed in road and train accidents in four districts on Sunday.
Of them, four were killed as a commuter train derailed in Tongi of Gazipur, disrupting Dhaka’s communications with rest of the country for over three hours.
Police of Kamalapur Government Railway Police (GRP) said the Dhaka-bound commuter train from Jamalpur veered off the tracks around 12:45 pm, leaving three of its passengers dead on the spot and 30 others injured.
Seven of the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Tongi General Hospital while the rest were given first aid. Among the injured, Shahadat Hossain, 35, died at the DMCH.
The train communications resumed around 4 pm.
Meanwhile, a three-member investigation committee was formed to look into the train derailment.
Director General of Bangladesh Railway Amzad Hossain said the probe committee, headed by Chandan Kanti Dey, Chief Signal Telecom of Bangladesh Railway, will submit their report within three days.
In Naogaon, six people were killed in separate road accidents in Porsha and Patnitala upazilas.
Four of deceased were identified as Abdul Salam, 52, Ashraful Islam, 45, Hira Bibi, 60, and Ramjan Ali, 50.
Police superintendent of the district Md Iqbal Hossain said a Porsha-bound bus crashed into an auto-rickshaw at Kusrapara in Porsha upazila, leaving three people dead on the spot and five others injured.
Of the injured, two died on the way to hospital, he said.
In another accident, Ramjan, a fisherman, died when a fish-laden three-wheeler overturned at Bridgermor of Patnitala upazila, said officer-in-charge of Patnitala Police Station Mazharul Islam.
In Kushtia, two schoolboys were killed as a train hit their motorbike at Chitholia level crossing near Poradaha Railway Station in Mirpur upazila.
The deceased were identified as Ayatullah, 14, son of Saidul Islam of Ailchara village in Sadar upazila, and Mubin, 13, son of Saidul Islam of the same village. They were students of Aichara High School.
Shariful Islam, station master of Poradaha Railway Station, said the train hit motorcycle around 11:45am when they were passing the level crossing, leaving Ayatullah dead on spot.
Later, Mubin died on the way to hospital.
In Manikganj, a young man was killed and eight people were injured following a head-on a collision between a bus and a human-hauler on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Muljan area of sadar upazila in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Mintu Miah, 25, son of Mofidul Islam of Ghior upazila.
The Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Southern Paribahan’ hit the human-hauler (locally named as Leguna) around 8am, leaving Mintu dead on the spot and eight other human hauler passengers injured.
