Festive mood to welcome Pahela Boishakh

An enthusiastic mood has been prevailing before welcoming "Pahela Baishakh", the Bengali New Year-1425, everywhere in Chattogram city and district amid traditional festivities today.Chattogram city, all the upazila towns of the district and others important places have worn festive looks and law enforcement agencies taken tight security measures to ensure peaceful celebrations of the traditional "Pahela Baishakh" festivities, Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Mohammad Ilias Hossain said, reports BSS.

The city, district and upazila administrations, authorities of different municipalities including Chattogram City Corporation, the authorities of different pourashabha and other organisations have completed preparations to welcome "Pahela Baishakh" in all 15 upazilas of the district.

The government, non-government, socio-cultural, professional, trade bodies, business and other organizations, NGOs, private bodies and educational institutions have also taken preparations to celebrate the occasion. Celebration of the 'Chaitra Sangkranti', the last day of the outgoing year, already began today in the country's business hub Khatunganj side by side hats, bazars, groceries, sales centers and important places through traditional 'Halkhata' for renewal of business accounts clearing dues, Mahabubul Alam, president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries said.

According to the Chattogram district administration, different colourful programmes have been chalked out to welcome 'Pahela Baishakh' with traditional festivities of the Bangalees. To welcome the Bengali New Year, a colourful "Mongol Shova Jatra" will be started from Chattogram circuit house at 9 am tomorrow and will end at Shilpokala Academy after parading different important city streets, Ilias Hossain added.

In port city, the celebrations will begin with traditional 'Baishakhi' programmes of Shilpokola Academy, Shishu Academy, different educational institutions including Chittagong University, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology and DC hill premises at 9 am today.

Later, Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) in association with a dozens of its organizations will bring out the 'Baishakhi' procession at Swadhinata Park of Bahaddarhat in the city in participation of its 35 schools and colleges students at 9 am to welcome the Bengali New Year, Abdur Rahim, publice relation officer of CCC told BSS. City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, will inaugurate the procession as the chief guest.

Thousands of people of all ages will take part in the procession carrying festoons, placards and banners and singing Baishakhi songs, 'Polli Geeti', 'Jarigan', 'Bhatiali', 'Baul', 'Lalon Geeti', 'Nazrul Geeti' and 'Rabindra Sangeet' and folk songs at the DC hill park.

Improved diets will be served to inmates of the all hospitals, including Chattogram Medical College Hospital, Chattogram Central Jail, orphanages, 'Shishu Paribars', vagabond centres and orphanages in the district. The law enforcement agencies have taken extensive security measures in the city and district for the celebration in a cheerful and festive environment.

Meanwhile, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) yesterday issued a traffic advisory ahead of the Pahela Baishakh. According to the traffic advisory of CMP, people should use 14 diverted points for traffic movement centering the DC Hill and CRB Hill and Swadhinata Park on April 14.

All entry and exit points of the DC Hill, CRB Hill and Swadhinata Park will be monitored round-the-clock by setting the Closed Circuit (CC) TV Cameras, CMP additional police commissioner Amena Begum said. She also urged people of all concerned to complete their respective function by 5 pm on April 14.
