PEC scholarships winners named
The government has named the winners of scholarships in Primary Education Completion or PEC examinations.
The 82,500 names were published on the website of Directorate of Primary Education: dpe.gov.bd.
Among them, 33,000 received scholarships in ‘talent pool’ while 49,500 received awards in general categories.
Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman disclosed the numbers at a news conference at the secretariat on Tuesday.
The winners will receive monthly stipends for the next three years. The amount is Tk 300 for those in talent pool and Tk 225 for those in the general category.
The scholarship aims at preventing dropouts, increase attendance rates in classrooms and recognise talent. The winners are decided on results of PEC exams.
Fifth graders used to sit for separate scholarship tests until 2010 when the PEC scholarships were introduced at the upazila and ward levels.
The primary and mass education ministry has raised the stipend amount this year.
Last year, the pass rates in PEC and Ebtedayi exams were 95.18 percent and 92.94 percent respectively.
A total of 262,609 students took the PEC exams while 5,023 students took the Ebtedayi exams that year.
