Running Wild with Bear Grylls is a show where Bear Grylls takes takes a noted celebrity with him through the wild and they try to survive it together. The show started in 2014 and it has been successful so far and it will be renewed for a 4th season on May 30th, 2018.

The show consists of Bear Grylls, a person who produces a story, two people in charge of camera cinematography, two audio recordists and a mountain guide. Bear stressed that safety is always an issue in the show as he is not only responsible for his life but also for the lives of the celebrities he takes onward with him. In a Special Episode in season 2, which premiered on December 17th, 2015, Bear was asked to take ex-US President Barack Obama to the wild. Their destination is the Exit Glacier positioned in Seward, Alaska.

In an interview on a show called This Morning Bear expressed to the hosts that he thought someone was playing him a joke when The White House called and stated President Obama wanted them to do an episode together. Obama told Bear that he likes Bear's values and what he does for the youth.

Bear also stated that he loves Obama's humble and family centric nature in the show. He added that President Obama wanted to be known in his presidency for championing climate change awareness and he is a significant man in the modern age to do such a thing.

He also explained in the interview that there were a lot of men covering the area as in secret service and snipers positioned overhead. In Behind the Scenes of the show, he was curious to know what the snipers were looking for and claimed he probably didn't want to know. In the same Behind the Scenes segment he commented there was a military helicopter scouting the terrain overhead to make sure everything was safe.

In This Morning Bear also lauded Obama's fast mind because he is able to remember many details. When told about survival skills he picks up things and remembers them very well. In Behind the Scenes, Obama stated that being President is like living in a bubble. He is grateful to his security team but feels a bit confined in the fact they monitor him so closely.
He stated jokingly that they have a phrase called "The bear has gone lose." If he does anything unscripted or out of schedule. In a frank banter with Bear in behind the scenes he admitted this and that he enjoys at times going and doing things unplanned, not to make his team nervous, but because he likes to do things on his own.

When asked in these Behind the Scenes by Bear if he would encourage his daughters to be in politics he said 'no', however, he would support them wholeheartedly if that is their choice. He said that to his daughters that being useful and kind in any field is important and Bear had to agree with him fully. The two men seemed to respect each other a lot.

Before the episode starts and they are going to meet, Obama jokes that Bear eats almost everything in the show but he will stick to some general stuff as he doesn't wish to get sick as he has stuff to do after the episode. When they meet Obama and Bear hit off with a good banter and Obama stresses he wants to be aware of the receding Exit Glacier as one of the evidences of climate change. Bear agrees with his method.

They have to go through a forest to reach this Exit Glacier but Bear is also aware this is classic bear territory and he is with the President of the United States. Soon, they come across bear fur on a tree bark and Obama states they will be extra careful. Bear explains that bears are most dangerous when you surprise them, when they are feeding, protecting and young and when they are mating. Obama astutely jokes that humans are pretty much the same and they laugh a bit.

Bear says that if humans intrude on bear territory they must back away slowly, keep eye contact and not to turn or run. Also, if they intrude or your territory, best thing Bear says is to make lots of noise so that they know you are not worth the fight. The team continue their journey and Bear asks Obama if he is afraid of anything.

Obama states he is usually game with most things and that only his wife, Michelle, scares him when she looks angry. Bear confesses that cocktail parties are usually scary for him so he may not make a good president as he does not do well in social gatherings.

Bear then shows how glacier water wash can crack down certain rocks but narrow scraps of this rock can be used for cooking. Bear and President Obama then start collecting catkin leaves, small ones, so that they can make tea out of them.

Bear's friends told him to get a selfie with the President so they came across this grew view on a flat rock and Bear and President Obama took some selfies. Obama later stated, in behind the scenes, that it was one of his staff's phones as for security reasons he could not have his.

Then in their journey Bear piles a group of rocks and states that they get strong, katabatic winds from funnel of the Glacier that helps to start fires. They make a rock wall and use the slate from the rock fall from before and fire steels to make the fire. They use cotton wool as fuel and the President makes a fire.

Bear comments that making fires with fire steels can be tough but Obama accomplishes it quite well. Bear states that it is annoying when the President is good at everything to which Obama replies he did not climb Everest like Bear.

Bear takes a leftover fish eaten by a bear and says that this their lunch for the journey. He explains to Obama that bears usually tend to eat the high caloric fat and leave some of the meat. They are eating the half eating salmon and Obama also makes Bear a smore. Bear comments that it is horrible but Obama jokes that it is the best thing he has eaten on the show.

Off the camera, he also jokes that Bear's claim to fame by many people is that he drank his own urine several times. They continue their heart to heart and Bear asks if he ever thought he would be President and Obama say no to it. Because a child of a single mother in Hawaii named Barack Obama has great odds against him. Bear has respect for this statement.

They reach the end of their journey and they say goodbyes amicably. The episode is highlighting the message that climate change is real and nature preservation is so important. Not only for today but for generations to come. The episode was special as it has a US President as a celebrity doing hiking and things usually we don't consider presidents to do.
