No accurate data on city population size

  • Print

"Authorities concerned don't know how many people live in Dhaka North and Dhaka South," said Center for Urban Studies president Prof Nazrul Islam. Expressing disappointment the urban expert said that after going through a hectic search, he could find the boundaries of the two Dhaka City Corporation. However, he failed to get any specific information about the size of the Dhaka population and raised question about the duties of the officials concerned.

He came up with the remark while speaking at a discussion at KIB auditorium in the metropolis yesterday. Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) and Bangladesh Poribesh Network (BEN) jointly organized the program on water-logging issue.  "After asking for the data several times, DSCC absurdly told me that a total of 1.2 crore people dwell in Dhaka South. However, the previous survey said the total population of Dhaka is 1.50 crore," said Prof Nazrul Islam. Prof Islam highly speculated about the plans for the city drafted by several utility providers including RAJUK and Dhaka WASA. He, however, admitted that RAJUK has manpower shortage.

A vast region of the eastern part of Dhaka used to remain flooded. A 100 feet wide canal has been dug up at Nikunja-Purbachal area to resolve the issue. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered the project. Terming it "costly", Prof Islam questioned if the PM had to come up with the solution, then what the concerned authorities did. He also expressed dissatisfaction about utility providers as they move "very slowly" while taking any project.
